How to Disable Read Receipts
Learn how to disable read receipts on iPhone, Android, WhatsApp, Instagram, and more. Step-by-step instructions for every major platform so you can read messages in peace.
Read receipts are one of those features that sound useful in theory but create pressure in practice. The moment someone sees you have read their message, the clock starts ticking on when you are supposed to reply. If you would rather read messages on your own terms without announcing it, disabling read receipts is a simple fix. This guide covers how to turn them off on every major platform.
How to Disable Read Receipts on iPhone (iMessage)
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Messages.
- Toggle off Send Read Receipts.
Once disabled, people you message will no longer see the “Read” indicator beneath their messages. Note that this applies to iMessage only. SMS messages do not have read receipts by default.
You can also disable read receipts for individual conversations on iPhone. Open a conversation, tap the contact name at the top, and toggle off Send Read Receipts for that person only.
How to Disable Read Receipts on Android (Google Messages)
- Open the Messages app.
- Tap the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- Tap Chat features or RCS chats depending on your version.
- Toggle off Send read receipts.
This disables read receipts for RCS messages (the modern standard for Android-to-Android messaging). Standard SMS does not support read receipts.
How to Disable Read Receipts on WhatsApp
WhatsApp calls read receipts “blue ticks.” When both ticks turn blue, the sender knows you have read their message.
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots in the top right.
- Go to Settings > Privacy.
- Toggle off Read Receipts.
One important trade-off: when you turn off your own read receipts, you also lose the ability to see read receipts from others. You will not know when your messages have been read either.
Note that read receipts in group chats cannot be disabled. They remain visible in groups even when the setting is off for individual chats.
How to Disable Read Receipts on Instagram
Instagram uses “Seen” receipts in direct messages. There is no official setting to turn them off.
Your options are:
- Use Airplane mode. Turn on Airplane mode before opening a message. Read it, close the app, then turn Airplane mode off. The “Seen” receipt may not register if the message loads from cache before a connection is made. This method is inconsistent and not guaranteed.
- Use a third-party inbox tool. Some social media management tools let you preview messages without triggering seen receipts. This is more reliable but requires a third-party account.
Instagram has not built in a native toggle for this feature.
How to Disable Read Receipts on Facebook Messenger
Like Instagram, Messenger does not offer a built-in toggle for read receipts.
The Airplane mode trick works here too with the same inconsistency. A browser extension called Unseen is available for Chrome and Firefox that prevents Messenger from sending read receipts when you view messages in a browser. It does not work in the Messenger app.
How to Disable Read Receipts on Snapchat
Snapchat does not have a read receipt setting either. However, you can use the same Airplane mode approach to open snaps without triggering a “Opened” notification. Load the snap while connected, switch to Airplane mode before opening it, view it, close Snapchat completely, then reconnect.
Results vary depending on how recently the snap was cached.
Quick Reference: Read Receipt Settings by Platform
| Platform | Can You Disable? | Where to Find It |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone iMessage | Yes | Settings > Messages |
| Android Messages | Yes | Messages > Settings > Chat features |
| Yes (individual only) | Settings > Privacy | |
| No native option | Airplane mode workaround | |
| Facebook Messenger | No native option | Browser extension workaround |
| Snapchat | No native option | Airplane mode workaround |
The Short Answer
To disable read receipts, go to the privacy or messaging settings of the app you use. iPhone and Android both have straightforward toggles. WhatsApp lets you turn them off but removes your ability to see others’ receipts in return. Instagram, Messenger, and Snapchat have no built-in option, but the Airplane mode trick offers a workaround with mixed results.
