How to Rotate Screen on Chromebook

Chromebook

Learn how to rotate the screen on Chromebook using a keyboard shortcut or display settings. This guide covers all rotation options and how to fix an accidentally rotated screen.

Whether you flipped your Chromebook into tablet mode and the screen ended up sideways, or you intentionally need a portrait orientation for reading or coding, knowing how to rotate the screen on a Chromebook takes about five seconds once you know the shortcut. This guide covers the keyboard shortcut, the settings menu option, and how to fix a screen that rotated on its own when you did not want it to.

The Fastest Way to Rotate the Screen on a Chromebook

The quickest method is a keyboard shortcut that works on almost every Chromebook model.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Refresh

The Refresh key looks like a circular arrow and sits in the top row of the keyboard, usually in the fourth position. Each time you press this combination, the screen rotates 90 degrees clockwise. Press it four times to cycle back to the original orientation.

That is all you need for most situations. The change takes effect immediately with no confirmation required.

How to Rotate the Screen Through Display Settings

If you prefer using the settings menu, or if the keyboard shortcut does not work on your device, you can rotate the screen through ChromeOS display settings.

  1. Click the clock or system tray in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  2. Click the gear icon to open Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, click Device.
  4. Click Displays.
  5. Under your display, find the Orientation dropdown menu.
  6. Select your preferred rotation: 0°, 90°, 180°, or 270°.

The screen rotates as soon as you select the option. This method gives you precise control if you need a specific orientation rather than cycling through 90-degree increments.

How to Rotate the Screen on a Chromebook in Tablet Mode

If you use a convertible Chromebook that flips into tablet mode, ChromeOS includes an auto-rotate feature that adjusts the orientation based on how you are holding the device.

To enable or disable auto-rotate in tablet mode:

  1. Open the system tray by clicking the clock in the bottom right.
  2. Look for the Auto-rotate button in the quick settings panel.
  3. Click it to toggle auto-rotate on or off.

When auto-rotate is on, the screen follows the physical orientation of the device. When it is off, the screen stays fixed at whatever orientation it is currently set to regardless of how you hold the Chromebook.

How to Fix a Chromebook Screen That Rotated Accidentally

If your screen is sideways or upside down and you are not sure why, the Ctrl + Shift + Refresh shortcut is the fastest fix. Press it until the screen returns to the standard landscape orientation (0 degrees).

If that does not work, go to Settings > Device > Displays and set the orientation back to 0° manually.

Some Chromebooks rotate automatically when picked up if auto-rotate is enabled and the accelerometer detects a change in position. If your screen keeps rotating on its own and you do not want it to, disable auto-rotate in the quick settings panel as described above.

Screen Rotation Options Explained

Orientation Degrees When to Use
Standard landscape 0° Default for most use
Portrait 90° Reading long documents, coding
Upside down landscape 180° Mounted or shared screen setups
Portrait flipped 270° Alternative portrait orientation

The Short Answer

To rotate the screen on a Chromebook, press Ctrl + Shift + Refresh. Each press rotates the screen 90 degrees. To set a specific orientation, go to Settings > Device > Displays and choose from the orientation dropdown. If your screen keeps rotating on its own in tablet mode, toggle off auto-rotate in the quick settings panel. All three methods take under a minute.
